Individual Basketball Roles

These are the roles we go discuss with every player in our program.
These roles are discussed with each player around the 1st of the year
1’s: Player 1, Player 2, Player 3
Roles for all 1’s
Have the ball by defensive top of the key in transition from defense to offense
GET THE BALL /DEMAND IT/ Go get it
Communicate with Coach
Manage Clock / Last shot of quarter
Advance ball with pass / GET BALL INSIDE on pass and dribble
Stop any transition dribble by defensive top of key
Stop all dribble penetration
Come Back for Outlets
Control the dribble defensively/ Stop penetration, don’t reach
Dig to post entry passes—against good posts

Player 1
Good decision making with the ball
Attack with dribble vs. transition and zones
Finish around the basket
Dictate tempo and openers for fist
More assists than turnovers—3 to 1 ( 5 or more assists a game)
Less than 1 turnovers a game
Play good defensive / Take pride in it
Don’t lose your defender
Know what we are doing on both offense and defensive end and communicate it to teammates.

Player 2
Push ball with pass in transition
Don’t talk or react to Opposing Players, Officials and Crowd
Hit open shot out of the offense. Do not force things offensively
Physical defender / No Silly Fouls
One or less turnovers
Use speed to beat defender to spot. Not your hands
Bring energy to the floor when given opportunity

Player 3
Push ball with pass in transition
Attack with dribble vs. transition and zones
Make good decisions/ Quality minutes with 0 mistakes
Take care of the ball
Work on your Defense. Take pride in your defense
Be Ready to shoot on Inside/Out action in our offense
Accept role and make team better
Bring energy from the bench
Bring energy to the floor

2/3’s: Player 1, Player 2, Player 3, Player 4, Player 5
Fill wings in transition : be at sideline looking to middle of court early in transition
Defend best perimeter player
Outlet
Contain dribble penetration by forcing middle
Make extra pass in every facet/type of offensive situation
Post entry pass hits player on target hand
Get to the Free throw line
Double without fouling
2 Dribble Max on Offensive End

Player 1
Vocal / Positive leader
Offensive and Defensive rebounder (7 plus reboundrs )
Know Defensive situations and communicate to teammates
Active in the back of zones / Get to corners on 21, cheat and anticipate
Hands High on Closeout
Be a Defensive Stopper ( In position / not taking chances)
Be a Leader
Be more consistent at the line.
Be consistent with your play in all four quarters
Get down court wide on the wing / Offense within system
Understand end of game situations/ shot selection/ control the flow
Attack basket at end of game- don’t settle for jump shot
Less than 2 turnovers per game.
5 or more assists a game
Player 2
Exploit mismatches offensively
2 Dribble Max
Work On Free Throws
Minimize turnovers especially when you are dribbling.
Get Hands Up on Defense
5 or more assists a game
8 Rebounds a game
Know Defensive situations and communicate to teammates
Be a Defensive Stopper / Know who you are guarding
Less than 2 turnovers per game
Understand end of game situations/ shot selection/ control the flow
Hit jumpshots on inside-out action in offense

Player 3
Ball security / Good Decision Making
Stop dribble penetration
Low Turnovers ( Less than 2 a game)
7 or more rebounds a game
Take it strong at the basket and finish!
Strong with the ball every time you touch it
Rebounder on Both Ends of the Court
Know the Offenses and when to attack
Communicate to Teammates about offenses and defenses
Defensive Stopper / See the Ball
Understand end of game situations/ shot selection/ control the flow

Player 4
Out hustle every opportunity/ Don’t get out of position
Keep working to get back to pre-injury conditioning, etc
Be ready to play in any situation.
Do not Dribble too much.
Understand role as you come back to the team
2 Dribble Max
Hit Open 3
Accept role and make team better
Bring energy from the bench
Physical defender on perimeter
Limit fouls and turnovers

Player 5
Be ready to play in any situation
Play Hard and Smart during Practice
Win Sprints
Attack basket in transition
Defensive Stopper
Make our scout team better
Bring intensity every possession in practice and games
Know our plays, defenses, etc…
Accept role and make team better
Bring energy from the bench
Be ready to play in any situation
Work on Defensive positioning

4/5’s: Player 1, Player 2, Player 3

End defensive possessions with rebound and Outlet to 1 man
Take ball out of bounds after made baskets
Get to block in transition
Chest up defensively in low block situations
Help-and recover on any lane penetration
Finish with contact in the paint
Establish and maintain position on lane line above the block ofensively/defensively

Player 1
Be the best rebounder in the state( Ave 10 rebounds)
Bring energy to the floor
Keep ball high and score when catching ball on the block/wide
Be ready and confident to hit 10-15 footer / Attack basket
Finish close to the basket.
Set wide screens outside of the lane to get people space ( Don’t Move)
Be Smart ( No silly fouls, hanging on the rim, etc)
Be Positive with teammates
Take care of the Ball!

Player 2
Be one of the top rebounders in the state.
Don’t settle for jump shots
Play smarter on Defense
Know our offenses and defenses at all time
Lock down defender
Play with intensity / stay out of foul trouble
Understand the game situation / shot selection
Score and understand good shots within our offense
Come with intensity and focus to practice everyday
Concentrate on Free Throws

Player 3
Bring energy from the bench
Rebound on both ends of the court
Play defense with 100% effort
Learn our offenses and defenses
Accept role and make team better
Bring energy from the bench
Be more physical
Strong outlet pass after every rebound
Quality minutes with 0 mistakes
Get out on break and fill lane
Come with intensity and focus to practice everyday
Finish and be strong with the ball
Accept role and make team better
Never stop working for the ball offensively
Make sure ball is secured and in transition stay in the center of the court
Strong outlet pass after every rebound
Demand the ball in the post / Get to post in transition
